Licenses are advisable, for insurance purposes, but not necessary in order to start.
- Thorough pre-race checks on race equipment (cycles & helmets) will be carried out by the marshals. Your bike must be in working order, with working brakes, and you must have an approved bicycle helmet. Any competitor with substandard equipment will be refused entry.
- A wetsuit (neoprene) is mandatory for the swimming event.
- Drafting is not permitted.
- The use of non-legal performance enhancement supplements is forbidden. The Norwegian Olympic Association may carry out random doping checks.
- The organizer retains the right to change the course at any time for safety reasons.
- Doctors and marshals appointed by the organizers may remove a competitor from the race should there be a health or injury risk to the competitor.
- The cycle route is not closed off to traffic. Road traffic regulations must be strictly observed at all times.
- Great demands concerning responsibility are made on the competitor.
Special rules for the Norseman:
Norseman is a race different from all others. These are the special rules of the competition:
- Competitors will have to sign a document for "Release from Liability" before they receive their start numbers.
- Support persons will have to co-sign the "Release from Liability", confirming that both the User Manual and the Support Manual are read and understood.
- Competitors are allowed to use a neoprene cap and neoprene socks.
- Competitors will not be disqualified for cycling side by side with other competitors during the 5 major hills on the bike leg.
- Competitors will not be disqualified for receiving technical support by their own support team during the bike leg. Any change of bike or wheels must be reported to the secretary at the finish line.
- Competitors are not allowed to sit in a car during the competition, even if the car stands still.
- Competitors might be disqualified if their support team cause dangerous traffic situations for other competitors. This is particularly important during the bike leg.
Expected weather conditions:
- Water temperature: 15,5 to 17,5 C (59 to 63 F)
- Air temp. on the bike leg (Hardanger plateau): 10 to 23 C (50 to 74 F)
- Air temp. on the run leg (the valley): 18 to 28 C (65 to 83 F)
- Air temp. on the Mountain Gaustatoppen: 5 to 15 C (41 to 59 F)
No service stations during the bike leg:
This is due to the very limited parking capacity during this part of the race. The roads are small and narrow and cannot have many support cars parked side by side at the same time. The competitors will receive boxes with the necessary supplies.
Service stations during the marathon leg:
No permanent support stations are available during the first 25 km of the marathon, but there are water stations, toilets and mobile support from Red Cross. There are food stations up the hills.
Mountain safety checkpoint in Stavsro:
After 37.5 kilometers of the run, you will leave the asphalt road and enter the rocky mountain path for the last 4.7 kilometers. There is a risk of extreme weather conditions in the mountain. Therefore, there will be a special checkpoint to assure that:
- You are fit enough to continue to the finish.
- Both you and your support team have the necessary equipment in a backpack, containing warm clothes, food and drink. You must carry your own equipment.
- You will not be allowed to enter the mountain alone. If your support team does not follow you into the mountain, you will be held back and connected to the next competitor. This concerns all competitors. You are not allowed to enter the mountain alone!
