Record-high interest for Norseman Xtreme triathlon 2026 edition:
The interest in participating in the Norseman Xtreme Triathlon continues to grow. Ahead of the 2026 race, a record-high 7 956 athletes from 100 countries applied for a chance to participate in the popular race, which includes 3 800 metres of swimming, 180 km of cycling, and 42.2 km of running with the finish line at the iconic Mount Gausta, 1 883 metres above sea level.
“There is a continued and growing global interest in Norseman – and we do not take that for granted,” says Fredrik Mandt, Race Director. “Since 2023, we have seen a significant increase in the interest from younger athletes. It’s inspiring to see so many younger athletes drawn to the race and the mountains”.
The numbers reveal a clear generational shift. Since 2023, the number of applicants under 30 has grown by nearly 270 per cent. This has led to the average age dropping from 42 to 39 years, signalling that a new wave of endurance athletes is discovering the challenge of Norseman. While the overall share of women remains modest and steady at 8 to 9 per cent, the number of female applicants has grown by 71 per cent since 2023 — nearly matching the growth among men. Still, of the slots allocated in the lottery, at least 15 per cent are awarded to women.
Historically, around 20 per cent of the athletes at the starting line are women. Norway remains the core of the race, with 2 964 Norwegian applicants this year — more than double the 2023 figure — yet the country’s relative share has declined slightly as international interest expands. The number of represented nationalities climbed from 95 to 100, with significant increases from Germany (+57%) and France (+10%), while the UK and US remain steady.
“Norseman is about building confidence through experience. We want ordinary people to
experience that they can accomplish extraordinary things,” Mandt ends.
